Merbau vs Bengkirai: choosing the right hardwood for decking
12 October 2026 · 5 min read
Merbau and Bengkirai are the two species we are asked about most for outdoor decking. Both are naturally durable tropical hardwoods, both machine well into profiles, and both have a long track record in demanding climates. They are not interchangeable though, and the differences matter when you specify a project.
Merbau (Intsia bijuga)
Merbau is known for its rich red brown colour that deepens with age. It is very stable once dried, which means less movement, cupping and checking on the deck. It also contains natural oils and extractives that help it resist decay and insects. For residential decks, screening, stair treads and premium joinery, Merbau is often the first choice.
One thing to plan for: fresh Merbau can release tannins when it first gets wet. A wash with a deck cleaner before oiling, and keeping run off away from light coloured paving during the first weeks, solves this.
Bengkirai (Shorea laevis, Yellow Balau)
Bengkirai starts as a yellow to light brown timber and weathers to a soft silver grey if left untreated. It is very dense and hard wearing, which makes it a strong option for commercial decks, boardwalks, pool surrounds and outdoor structures. It is usually more cost effective than Merbau for large volumes.
How to decide
Choose Merbau when appearance and stability are the priority. Choose Bengkirai when you need a tough, high traffic surface at scale. If you are unsure, we can send samples of both in your preferred profile so you can compare colour and finish side by side.
