Caring for tropical hardwood decking
17 August 2026 · 3 min read
Tropical hardwood is naturally durable, but a little care keeps the colour rich and the surface comfortable underfoot.
After installation
Clean the deck with a dedicated deck cleaner to remove dust and surface tannins. Let it dry fully before applying any finish.
Oil or let it weather
A penetrating decking oil with UV protection keeps the original colour. Without oil, both Merbau and Bengkirai will gradually turn silver grey, which some owners prefer. The timber remains durable either way.
Regular care
Sweep leaves and debris so water does not sit on the boards. Wash once or twice a year and re oil when the surface starts to look dry, usually every 6 to 12 months depending on sun exposure.
Ventilation
Good airflow under the deck helps the boards stay stable. Leave the gaps recommended by your installer between boards and at the edges.
